Web Design (Newfold Digital)

In April 2021, I began working as a Web Design Consultant for Newfold Digital (formerly known as Endurance International Group). In this position, I was expected to manage my own book of business and handle clients as a Designer. I was taught how to interact with clients and have efficient, effective meetings to extract the most information for website designs.

Newfold Digital is the parent company of many of the most prominent Web Hosting companies such as BlueHost, HostGator, iPage, etc. In this position, we took on designs for clients from each of these companies.

For each project, I work with members of other departments (Sales and Marketing) to ensure that the client is satisfied and their goals are met. The goal is to launch 10 projects/projects each month. (The most clients I’ve had at one time is 14!!!). This position expects a lot from you in terms of time management, self-governance, and design expertise. Additionally, clear and effective communication is critical to the success of each project. This consists of emails, phone calls, and walkthrough videos.

In my short time here I have already learned so much about website design, WordPress, client/customer interactions, and other technical aspects (DNS, FTP, etc).

Design Process

The process to design each website required more than just web design skills. I approach each project with the mindset of a UX designer as well, making sure to take into account the needs of the client and the needs of the user.

Each project began with a “Welcome Call” which was critical in understanding the business goals, client needs, user needs, and the style that the website would need. This was the most critical step since the entire project was built on this interaction. After this, I would finally begin to build the website.

Once the website was built, we would conduct the first revision round, where the client would give their feedback on the site so far and I could take notes or even make live edits. Following this revision call, I would make the necessary edits in time for the final revision call (if needed), which was essentially just a repeat of the revision call.

Once the client was satisfied with the site, I would launch it onto their hosting account using an FTP script, and make sure that all the plugins and settings were optimized. Then, I would create a pre-recorded walkthrough video that would show them how to edit, manage, and update their website.

The entire process was iterative, much like the UX process, particularly the Double Diamond.  There were a few projects where I had to go back to the Discovery/Planning phase when the initial build was not what the client envisioned. Instead of being discouraged, I appreciated this since it allowed me to refocus with more context and create a better end product.
